Tanghu Middle School Sports Meeting Junior Students Event November 15 and 16, 2018

Avery Epp

This is the first year I was able to attend the Junior School Sports day. It was nice to see all the students have taught before, especially the Junior 3 students that I do not teach this year. The weather was a little cool for the sports meeting, but it is still much warmer in Chengdu than I am used to in November in Canada, ha ha.
It is always nice to see my students outside of the classroom. I believe that the more time I get to spend with them outside of the class, they become more comfortable and are more willing to practice their English with me. So I always try to attend all functions outside of the classroom.
In Canada we have our sports meeting in late April. The events are a little different, the sports we do are most of the Olympic sports. We do the same running events that I saw here, but in Canada we also do a few longer running races (2000 meter and 5000 meter). We also do many different throwing events, like the Shot put, Discus and javelin, we also do the high jump, long jump and triple jump. The sports I saw here, that I never saw in Canada are the jump rope relay, and the class running relay. I think they are great team activities and would be a great addition to the Canadian sports day.
I would have spent more time at the event, but I was teaching the Senior 1 students in the morning, so I was not able to get as many pictures as I wanted with the students. But I was able to participate with the Junior 2 students in the throwing event. It is the closest event here in China to the ‘shot put’, so I like to try with the students, they don’t record my score, but that is fine. I am only trying so I get to participate with the students as well.
Hopefully next year the weather will cooperate more so the event can be an even greater success than it was this year. I hope everyone tried their best and had a lot of fun. There is a famous English saying about sports that I would like to share with you as I close my report. “It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, its how you play the game.” It means if you try your best, play fair, and cheer everyone on, no matter who wins, everyone will have fun. And having fun should always be a very important part of your life.
  Thank you
  Avery Epp
